She shut herself away

behind a thick door of oak

black wrought iron latch

locked tight

She was screaming into a blanket

muffled cries

I hear her voice tearing to shreds

coughing her heart into that blanket i wish was my chest

"I want to feel your pain with you, Love" I say. "Let me in."

Muffled screaming. Choking. Coughing.

More screams.

"I love you. Please, talk to me. It's gonna be alright."

A scream so loud I think she's lost the blanket

So loud she must be reaching through the ends of her fingers and toes

knocking into the walls and shattering everything in the room

except for this heavy door between us.

I pound at the door, I kick

I claw at the seam, at the lock

my hands have gone numb

and my feet must be broken

The screams have stopped.

I drop to the floor and press an ear to the door

"Love?"

I hear a whimper, then nothing.

"Hey, let me in please. Let me hold you in my arms. It's gonna be alright."

She's gone quiet.

My heart goes cold.

"Love?"

Nothing.

"Love?"

I go back to my pounding, my knocking

my breaking my fingers and toes

my throwing my body at a wall because my love is on the other side and what else am I to do?

"LOVE!" I scream it and scream it and pound and pound until I fall into a shaky fit of what sounds like laughter, but I know is something else

the sound of a really truly breaking heart

All my body is spent. I fall asleep.

~~~
I wake up to the creaking of hinges
the door swings inward
I blink as she walks over me in a gown of white
never looking down
"Love?"
She has already passed me by
her gaze on something down the stairs
through the window
over the hills
god knows where
"LOVE!"
But she doesn't look back.
